Yes, you’ve read it right. Well-known iOS hacker Grant Paul, better known as “chpwn,” posted a couple of pictures on Twitter Friday that showed an iPhone 5 running iOS 6 with Cydia installed.
In a reply on Twitter to another iOS jailbreak developer Stefan Esser, aka i0n1c, chpwn confirmed that the jailbreak was indeed genuine.
“Taller screens like Cydia too. :) pic.twitter.com/fE14vXN2,” chpwn tweeted.
“This is awesome news, for this to 1). Come from a respected jailbreak dev, and 2). For it to come on the same day of the iPhone 5 release,” said Jeff Benjamin of iDownloadBlog. “It also means that there is hope for jailbreaking A5X devices on iOS 6 as well.”
Given that the reaction from the jailbreak community was really quick, some skeptical minds could say that the photos of the jailbroken iPhone 5 are nothing but a set of Photoshop work. However, as Ben Reid of Redmond Pie noted, “the (jailbreak) community in general has grown to respect chpwn (Grant Paul) quite a bit over the years, and he’s definitely got the skills to pull something like this off.”
MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team has also retweeted chpwn’s tweet about the iPhone 5 jailbreak, landing further legitimacy to the exploit.
Although the iPhone 5 is apparently jailbroken, it’s not yet ready for the public use. In the case of iPhone 4S, it took a few months for the untethered jailbreak to get ready for primetime use. Since jailbreakers are now dealing with a new A6 processor this time, it’s likely to take quite some time for the jailbreak to be made available for the public.
But, as you can see, the process has already got a great start.
In addition, a tethered jailbreak for A4 based devices like the iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod touch 4th-generation running the latest iOS 6 is already available. For more information, click here.

Now the jailbreak for iOS 6 is also possible... so that's a great news but there are rumors that even after jailbreaking the device many of the repositories are not accessible.
